The Old Military Hospital of Quito is now the Contemporary Art Center of the city, which offers new spaces for painting, theater, dance, sculpture, photography, visual and digital arts, performances and others. The historic building had multiple uses since its construction at the beginning of the 20th century.
The beautiful and unique architecture that houses todays Contemporary Art Center in Quito is worth the visit alone. For years, a series of painters had made the abandoned Military Hospital a space for their workshops and finally pushed through to convince authorities to make it Quito’s first art center dedicated to modern art. With impressive high ceilings and plenty of exhibition space, temporary exhibits featuring local and international contemporary artists are always on show. Events and arts-and-crafts fairs also take place in one of Quito’s most impressive buildings.
