The monastery is in charge of the Immaculate Conception Order, sisters who have gone unnoticed by the prominence of the place where they are, next to the Presidential House and the Plaza Grande. There are few opportunities to get to know this historical relic of Quito. Do not miss it!
The Monastery of La Concepción cloister was founded in 1577, but the church and convent were built in the seventeenth century. Their patron saint is Our Lady of Good Success, to whom apparitions and miracles are attributed. On “Candelarias”, February 2, people carry candles to be blessed. The cloister also opens its doors on Christmas Eve.
In the monastery, a group of religious nuns live completely isolated from the outside world. Despite being located on one corner of the Plaza Grande, this church goes unnoticed and is overshadowed by the Presidential Palace that stands beside it. The monastery is considered the oldest in Quito and since its inception has been part of the Franciscan order. Additionally, it was the cleric Juan Yáñez who encouraged it to become a convent for nuns, which today sell their products through a turnstile. The Immaculate Conception had great treasures inside its building, but a fire caused major damages and the rehabilitation of the church and the convent passed into the hands of FONSAL (Fund of Salvation of the Cultural Heritage of Quito).
