Santa Catalina is one of the city’s most important cloisters, a true living museum of traditions and legacy.
On the corner of calles Flores and Espejo stands the striking Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Siena… yet another victim of earthquake, a bright orange cloister with a museum that highlights religious memories of centuries past and over 100 canvases of Baroque Art.
The Catalinas (St. Catherine acolytes) prepare and sell horseradish and eucalyptus syrups for coughs and remedies for the nerves, creams, candles and other products that claim to cure everything from warts, wrinkles to cancer. It is, in fact, quite interesting to simply listen to the people who come to the nuns for ailments. On the second floor, as a prelude to the visit of the museum, find a wooden bench… they say whoever sits on it, will soon be pregnant!
