THEATER VARIETIES ERNESTO ALBÁN
Located in the Theater’s Square (Plaza del Teatro), just across the National Sucre Theater, Teatro Variedades offers a special approach to the performing arts in a historic venue that commemorates one of the city’s most beloved actors.
Today, Teatro Variedades offers the most diverse artistic performances, from music to dance, in its intimate high-ceiling hall with a capacity of only 250 people. A tribute to one of Quito’s most important comedic actors, Ernesto Albán, the Teatro Variedades was designed by architect Giacomo Badiconzinni and was bought in 1940 by the Mantilla family (whose theater chain also included Teatro México), and worked for over fifty years exclusively as a cinema. It was in 2006 that the Salvage Fund of Quito (FONSAL) completed a thorough restoration process and re-inaugurated it as one of the city’s most important performance art venues in the country.
